Things to do while waiting for the Football Manager patch

Do you like this post?

The January transfer window is over, Football Manager has been in the shops for 4 months now, it is time for the latest patch. The third patch of the series is always hotly anticipated to update transfers and widely considered to make the game the most enjoyable. But with Chester being thrown out of the league and administration for Portsmouth it hasn’t been a simple task late in the day delaying it’s release, so what should we do to pass the time before the release in early march?

Try other updates

Many people will be waiting for the actual transfer update. There is very few problems this year, making the game one of the most playable out of the box Football Manager games in its history. So why not update your game using some of the unofficial data updates from people who have worked tirelessly to get a timely data update out to you.

The Chester Challenge

Chester won’t be in the game for much longer, I am not totally sure how SI games are going to handle the expulsion of the team from the league, would it be best to totally remove them from the game for one season and have them replaced in the second season? Alternatively they could be in the game until February when they are removed from the league and all points gained from Chester removed.

How would you handle the Chester situation?

But nevertheless this could be your final chance to take control of Chester City and try and save the small club in the Blue Square Premier, I’d be interested to hear if anyone else has taken on the Chester Challenge in Football Manager 2010?

Take a go at the editor yourself

If your unhappy with the game being out of date now, why not just make some wholesale changes of your own to create your own challenge. Why not create a low reputation Premiership team, with no players, no staff and only £70million to keep you up. A challenge that I fully enjoyed in Football Manager 2008 and 2009, but with the data editor you can set yourself a whole array of situations to challenge your skills.

Keep Trolling

The video made me laugh, he makes some good points but he is mainly trolling. Over the last few days the home of Football Manager trolls has been the official community site complaining that their is no patch, or asking when it will release or throw theories of super keepers about. Why not ditch the game until the third patch comes out to solve all your problems and instead complain about it anonymously.

Discuss the game and improve your own skills

But instead of trolling, try and recognise what is wrong with the game compared with what is missing in your skill set. The best way to improve your skills is to interact with blogs like mine in the comments section, I will be more then happy to discuss FM on Twitter, Facebook, Skype: fmpundit and MSN karma_roade@hotmail.com.

Alternatively find great communities of people at FM Britain the writers of the upcoming ‘Communication and Psychological Warfare’ and ‘Tactical Theorems 2010‘ . The home of tactical discussion can be such a great help for those who want learn. Want a big of fun and banter while discussion Football Manager, then Los Wonderkids is the place to be.

Listen to podcasts

Join me and FM-View for the Football Manager podcast, why not listen to the last one where we have our own moans and discussion about Football Manager. Then why not subscribe (iTunes link) as a new episode will be available this week with SEGA and SI Games discussing Football Manager Live.

What are you doing while waiting for the new patch? Or even what are you putting off until 10.3?

What is on your wishlist to have been fixed for the final patch of the game?

UPDATE: In true Murphy’s law situation, I the FM patch has been released. Those who have installed their game through STEAM will automatically have the new patch downloaded and installed for them. For everyone else click the link below.

The news articles I’ve read about Chester don’t say what will happen to Chester, but I guess they’ll be in the Blue Square North, if they manage to survive, because no football until next season will be tough. It will be interesting to see what SI do about this. The easy option is to just exclude them for the season, but that does have some financial effects on the other teams in their league, where each home match is very important to their survival.

I tire of the people that just go around trolling very quickly. Yes there are some issues, but quite a few of the problems seem to be more to do with the tactics people are trying to use.

As for the things I’d like to see done in the next patch are, in no particular order:

1. Resolve the issue with throw-ins after the ball was put out of play for an injury to be treated.
2. Resolve another issue with throw-ins where you occassionally see the player throw the ball striaght out in a completely unrealistic way. Saw one yesterday where one of my players managed to throw it at an angle behind straight out over the touchline. This affects both teams, but is still an irritation if your team does this near the end of a match, when you’re trying to push for a goal.
3. Sort out the consistency with accuracy of free kicks and long shots between your own team and the AI team. Seeing a player with long shots attribute lower than 5 consistently forcing your keeper to make great saves from distance, seems a bit crazy. Free kicks seems to have a similar problem. I have a player with free kicks at 19, and he sometimes has a great game where everything is on target or close, but then he’ll go for several games where he doesn’t even get near to being on target. I know in real life he’ll occassionally sky one, but I expect a bit more consistency, so the keeper is tested slightly more.
4. Offsides. I don’t think I have to say a lot about this one, but there are some ludicrous offsides still being given. This seems to affect teams that like to pass the ball about quickly, which I like my teams to do.
5. Fouls. There are a few blatantly silly ones being given, where a player runs into a another who is not obliged not actually move out of the way of the other player in the particular situation, but an obstruction is given against them. I also see something similar with players standing still waiting for the ball, with another player coming in behind them, but are somehow deemed to have fouled the player who comes from behind. This actually affects both teams, so is just a minor irritation. There also seems to be an above average number of fouls coming from handballs and shirt pulling. Shirt pulling is rarely penalised, unless it clearly stops a player from making the move or pass they wanted to. Oddly I’ve never seen a penalty given for a handball yet though.
6. Fixture congestion issue. I’ve not suffered this yet, but there are circumstances where fixtures being moved and then advancing in a cup competition can end up with matches on consecutive days. I know of two players that have suffered this, and seen it happen to Spurs in my own game.

Will be interesting how many of the above issues are tackled by the new patch. The offside issue irritates me the most, because of how I like my team to play. If we slow the tempo down, it’s rarely seen, but that’s not my style of play. Unfortunately it seems to be very difficult to sort out, because it was much the same in FM09.

It seems that the Chester situation was too late in the day for SI to deal with, so that solves one of my questions.

Trolling is an internet sport and FM is just an easy target for them, I think people do forget that tactics is something pretty hard to master, which is one of the reasons why we like FM. It just takes a little work, but if it doesn’t go right for them first time they do moan about it straight away.

I havent played the new patch yet, but I do see that my players do put the ball out for a corner in too many silly occasions when there is no threat around them. I hope that this is solved in the game.

Although I haven’t really noticed anything wrong with the offsides, maybe I just aint looking hard enough.

The list of changes to the match engine is immense. It looks like the issue I mentioned with offsides when the ball is passed about quickly has been resolved. Rather oddly my first match with the new patch is going to be Man United, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
