One of the key changes to Football Manager 2011 this year has been the development of the analysis system we first saw in 2010. This year has introduced some key changes, we can now see average positioning, heat maps and whole team analysis as opposed to player analysis.
A regular reader of Michael Cox’s chalkboard article for The Guardian, I thought that I would do some similar analysis of games within Football Manager to help demonstrate and hopefully show how this information can be useful, and hopefully interesting.
Playing Barcelona in a recent friendly it this shows how Barca despite losing the game 1-0 were able to pin my Santos team back for most of the game. Despite the fact that I like to see my teams play and press high up the pitch looking to get the ball back as soon as possible I spent most of the time keeping tight against Barcelona which we did well coming away with a 1-0 win. But without keeping tight here and incepeting well in our half could have seen Barcelona damage us as they try and pass it into the back of my net.
Despite losing this game against Corinthins it does demonstrate against a different opposition what I set up my tactics to do focusing on high pressing and gaining possession higher up the pitch. It was only unfortunate that although we were able to get the ball this far up the pitch we didn’t do anything with it. Creativity with injury to key players has become a problem for me at of late.
Athletico Paranaense v Palmerias at the time of playing was billed as a close game, both teams in form and fighting of the top places. The game finished 1-0 a cross into Ceaser Ramirez (AML Sub) coming inside to connect to a cross. But the most interesting part of this game was the control of the left hand wing where most of the passing was focused.
Interestingly this passing was mainly from Paulinho who looked to get forward spending the majority of his time in the final third. Supported by Olberdam who seemed to be playing a playmarker role despite being in a DMC starting position helped support the full back giving options to pass to being positive in the way he passed. But all of this allowed Netinho and in the second half Ceaser Ramirez to get into the box. Defending against this I would be inclined to stick a man right on Olberdam stopping his passing which seemed to run the tempo of the game.
Back to my own tactics in which I am struggling to beat and finish off teams despite dominating games. My tactics at Santos seem to be having the same problems as Arsenal occasionally. Trying to pass the ball into the box we occasionally lack a sense of directness that could edge us the games. We lacked creation trying to pass our way into the box, resulting in us hitting too many long shots which were more then often saved. We used the flanks well, but we didnt get the ball into the box enough.
